The Oncler finally chops down the last Truffula tree and realizes the damage of what he has done: he is left in desolation and is totally alone. The Lorax is the last to leave him—“lifting himself by the seat of his pants,” and ascends to the sky. The Oncler is left with a stone at his feet, and the word UNLESS, to which he tells the boy he’s revealed his story: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better….it’s not.”
