PEACE is the Polk Ecumenical Action Council for Empowerment
PEACE is a congregation-based direct-action organization founded in 2001 that engages diverse, Polk County congregations in doing justice by identifying the root causes of community problems and taking action.
PEACE is a multiracial, interdenominational, non partisan 501(c)3 nonprofit. We are devoted to identifying problems facing the community of Polk County. We are a direct action organization that proposes policy solutions to public officials in order to get to the root causes of community problems.
First United Methodist is proud to join with more than 20 other congregations in Polk to follow the biblical call to do justice.
The Community Problems Assembly is the first gathering of the annual PEACE cycle. It was held this year on October 27, 2020 at Hurst Chapel AME Church in Winter Haven.
The Rally was held on February 23, 2021 at First Presbyterian Church of Lakeland.
The Nehemiah Action took place on March 16, 2021 at the Silver Moon Drive-In in Lakeland. The Nehemiah Action is the main assembly for justice in our community, where we ask community leaders for concrete steps to address the community problems identified in our listening process.
Due to COVID-19, all of these events were done as a drive-in “car rally” and simulcast on the PEACE Facebook page. Cars filled the parking lot, we voted in our new executive committee, welcomed 3 new congregations, and voted to continue working on access to affordable housing and criminal justice.
Be sure to save these other dates for PEACE gatherings.
