When Life Pivots
The collection of pivotal moments that have greatly influenced our lives, such as a new job, a promotion, moving to another state, a marriage, a death, the birth of a baby, meeting someone new, or learning a loved one has a chronic illness, can unexpectedly and abruptly gives pause and we will reflect on our future.
Pivotal moments can present as “and then” moments and may occur when we least expect them and many of these defining moments are unwanted and we feel unprepared. “And then” life changes suddenly and brings uncertainly, anxiety, stress, and fear. These negative emotions can overwhelm us, or bring inspiration with the realization of the strengths we never knew we had. The choice is always ours in how these life-changing events can change us.
When you learned someone you love has dementia, whether you are a friend or family member, the trajectory of your life changes like you never expected. Confronting the unknown shatters the illusion of certainty. Navigating this new reality requires understanding, compassion, and developing the skills to support the person and maintain quality of life. We can embrace this journey and help the help stay independent as long as possible.
Connecting with others who understand the changes dementia can bring to the person and those who love them can provide enormous support. Learning as much as you can to understand the symptoms of dementia and how they affect your loved one, but most importantly how supporting someone living with dementia affects you and your emotional health.
