Promoting the Valuable Aspect of Human Diversity!

Vicky Pitner   -

July is Disability Pride Month and is an opportunity to celebrate people with disabilities, their identities, culture, and contributions to society. July is also the anniversary of the passing of the ADA Disability Rights Movement in 1990.

Rather than promoting “awareness,” the term “Pride” is used to honor the diversity and resilience  of the disability community. This celebration also aligns with the Social Model of Disability, viewing a disability is the results of social, attitudinal, and environmental barriers, rather than an individuals impairment.

Inclusion of all people in our communities is not just a legal right, it is the right thing to do.

Dementia is increasing being recognized as a disability and is considered a “hidden” or “invisible” disability because often there are no obvious physical signs people typically associate with other disabilities.

By celebrating Disability Pride Month, we can challenge the harmful ideas that people with disabilities must conform to specific norms to live a meaningful life. By fostering  inclusive and supportive environments for everyone and acknowledging the achievements, experiences and contributions of people with disabilities, including those living with dementia, we can become closer and make a better world.
