This Is Our Story Devotional Guide

Rev. Andy Whitaker Smith   -

MONDAY:

Scripture: John 16:12
“I have much more to say to you, but you can’t handle it now.”

There is something deeply comforting about Jesus admitting that the disciples are not ready for everything all at once. Faith is not a single moment of understanding; it is a lifelong unfolding. We often pressure ourselves to have complete clarity—about who we are, what God is doing, or what comes next—but Jesus speaks with patience rather than urgency. Trinity Sunday reminds us that God is not a puzzle to solve but a relationship into which we are continually growing. There is always more to learn, more to experience, and more grace waiting ahead of us.
Reflection: Where do you need permission to trust that growth in faith happens gradually?

TUESDAY:

Scripture: John 16:13
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.”

In a world constantly asking us to verify ourselves—to prove we belong, prove we understand, prove we are enough—it can become difficult to know who we really are. Yet Jesus promises that the Spirit does not abandon us in confusion. The Spirit guides, reveals, and reminds us of what is true. Not merely facts, but truth about God, truth about ourselves, and truth about the world we are called to love. The Christian life is not about possessing perfect certainty; it is about learning to walk attentively with the Spirit who continues guiding us forward.
Reflection: What voices compete for your attention, and how can you become more attentive to the Spirit’s guidance?

WEDNESDAY:

Scripture: John 16:13–14
“He will not speak on his own, but will say whatever he hears… He will glorify me.”

The Trinity reveals a God who exists in relationship—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit continually giving, receiving, glorifying, and sharing life together. God is not isolated or self-contained, but communal in love and action. That is why so much of Jesus’ ministry happens around tables, in crowds, among disciples, and within communities. Faith was never meant to be lived entirely alone. We belong to one another, and our stories become intertwined with the larger story of God’s grace unfolding in the world.
Reflection: How might your faith deepen when you experience it as “our story” rather than only “my story”?

THURSDAY:

Scripture: John 16:15
“Everything that the Father has is mine.”

Jesus describes an active sharing within the life of God—a continual movement of love, truth, and purpose. This reminds us that the Gospel is never only personal; it is also communal and systemic. Sin affects relationships, communities, and entire ways of living together, and grace works just as powerfully through communities seeking justice, compassion, and healing. Trinity Sunday calls us to see that following Christ is not only about private spirituality but about participating together in God’s restoring work in the world.
Reflection: Where do you see God calling communities—not just individuals—toward healing and transformation?

FRIDAY:

Scripture: John 16:12–15
“The Spirit… will proclaim to you what is to come.”

One of the most hopeful promises in this passage is that God is not finished speaking. The Spirit continues leading, teaching, and revealing what comes next. The Christian life is not about preserving a frozen moment in time; it is about remaining open to the living movement of God. Trinity Sunday reminds us that the life of faith is dynamic, relational, and always unfolding. There is always more grace to discover, more wisdom to receive, and more love to share.
Reflection: What future possibility might God be inviting you to remain open to right now?
