The Wishing Well (Devotional Guide)
Day 1: The Secret Wish in the Noon Sun (John 4:7)
Snow White sings, “Want to know a secret? Promise not to tell? We are standing by a wishing well.” She wishes for love to take her away from her loneliness. The Samaritan woman also has a secret—a history of five broken marriages, leaving her as an outcast.
Reflection: What “secret wish” or hidden shame are you carrying? What do you wish for when you think no one is listening?
Prayer: Lord, thank you that I don’t have to hide my shame or my desires from You. You see me, even when I try to hide.
Day 2: The One Who Hears the Wish (John 4:13-14)
Snow White sings, “Make a wish into the well, that’s all you have to do.” She hopes the well will carry her wish. In the story, the “Well” is not a magical object—it is a person. Jesus is sitting there, specifically waiting for her. He hears her unspoken longings..
Reflection: Stop looking for satisfaction in “wells” that run dry (people, success, distractions). Jesus is the only one who hears the true desire of your heart.
Prayer: Jesus, I confess I have tried to satisfy my soul with things that leave me thirsty again. Fill me with Your living water.
Day 3: Known, Not Just Heard (John 4:16-18)
Snow White sings, “I’m wishing… for the one I love to find me.” She wants to be found and understood. When Jesus tells the woman her story, He isn’t condemning her—He is showing her that He knows her completely yet still offers her grace.
Reflection: Does it scare you that Jesus knows everything about your past?
Prayer: Lord, thank you that I am fully known and still fully loved. Thank you that Your grace is bigger than my past.
Day 4: Leaving the Jar Behind (John 4:28-29)
After realizing her wish is coming true, Snow White is filled with hope. The Samaritan woman is so overwhelmed by the “One” she met that she leaves her water jar—the very reason she came to the well—behind. She no longer needs the old way of getting water because she found the source of life.
Reflection: What “water jar” (habit, fear, insecurity) do you need to leave behind to follow Jesus.
Prayer: Lord, help me to leave behind my fear and shame. Give me the courage to walk away from what used to define me.
Day 5: The “One Song” That Changes Everything (John 4:39, 42)
The Prince hears Snow White and responds with “One Song” of love, changing her life forever. The woman at the well shares her story, and the “One Song” (the Gospel) brings salvation to her entire town.
Reflection: The “One” who answered the woman’s wish is the same Jesus who promises to meet your deepest needs today. How can you share this hope with someone else?
Prayer: Jesus, You are the ultimate answer to my deepest wish. Thank you for being my Savior and my Living Water. Amen.
