Outreach

"Everyone
can be great because everyone can serve.
You don't have to have a college degree to serve.
You don't even have to make your subject and your verb agree...
You only need a heart full of grace...
a soul generated by love."
— Martin Luther
King, Jr.

United
Methodists have believed, from the beginning, that each of us is called
to
participate in the outreaching ministry of Jesus Christ. John Wesley
described this work in simple, practical terms: "Do all the good you can,
in all the places
you can, to all the people you can."
Putting
our faith into action is at the very heart of our Christian calling. By
volunteering to serve through church outreach ministries, every person in
the church has the opportunity to serve and to live their calling more
faithfully.
First United Methodist Church of Lakeland has a long tradition of being a
servant church. Whether building a house with Habitat for Humanity or
helping to send missionaries around the world, you will find the people of
this great church involved in serving. Our outreach budget
supports numerous mission and outreach ministries.
Mission &
Disaster Response teams have represented our church in Cuba, Louisiana,
South Carolina, Chile, the Appalachian region, Costa Rica, Bay St. Louis and
many parts of Central and South Florida over recent years following 5 devastating hurricanes. Mission trips and work
teams take people and donations from First Church into areas with special
needs so that we might help in times of difficulty and tragedy. We
have built nine Habitat for Humanity Houses sponsored
and worked on by the First Church family. We purchased
property and completed the Noah's Landing home, which is a home for disabled
adults to live independently in a warm, loving, and safe environment.
We have been helping with the expansion of the Noah's Landing complex known
as Noah's Nest. Our Children's Clothes Closet serve hundreds of children each year,
providing school uniforms, play and dress clothing as well as personal
toiletries and other basic needs.
Our outreach budget helps support several in the mission field. Connie DiLeo
in the Dominican Republic, while the Revs. Delbert and Sandy
Groves are in Zambia. Local missions for the homeless receive
assistance in their funding through our budget, as do several state and
national church mission ministries.
This funding does not include
what we give to the Florida Annual Conference through our apportionments
which is an additional $ 282,000.
"We
will share Christ by reaching out to neighbors near and far to share the
gospel in deed and word through the provisioning of human needs, both
physical and spiritual."
Matthew 25 and 28
