First United Methodist Church - Lakeland, Florida

Sunday Morning Groups (Adult Sunday School)

Sunday mornings are a time for worship and community. We encourage you to connect with one of the following groups to develop community and connection outside of our worship environments. Room numbers beginning with “C” indicate that the group meets on the second floor of the Children’s Ministry Building and Welcome Center.

BYKOTA (Be Ye Kind One To Another) – ROOM C-207

This friendly, non-threatening lecture / discussion class seeks to understand scripture. Our motto is, “I know what it says, but what does it mean?” Our diverse teaching team shares when and why the scripture was written and helps us understand what it means for us today. Another motto is “God’s love excludes no one.” We support several charities and we hold three or four class dinner-party socials each year. This class is for people who seek answers and perspectives in the Word and with each other.

The Genesis class is the place to be if you want a lively discussion, with interesting curriculum and various teachers! Genesis is comprised of professional couples and singles in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.

The Homebuilders Sunday School Class has been meeting since 1945. The motto is “We do not seek to bring Christ down to our level, but to bring us up to Christ’s level.” The class uses the Adult Bible Studies- Uniform Series exclusively as the curriculum. Rev. Brian Tiffany leads meaningful Bible study with in-depth lectures highlighted by PowerPoint maps, pictures, and supplemental resources. The class supports many community groups as well.

The Homebuilders class uses the Adult Bible Studies quarterly series.

Greek for “fellowship,” reflects both the attitude and mission of the Koinonia class as they share in life’s joys and concerns. Koinonia is a class with a long history as a vital part of First Church. They are a growing, discussion-based class intent on in-depth Bible study as it applies to daily living. They also enjoy social gatherings throughout the year! Koinonia welcomes everyone regardless of age or marital status.

If you are “searching” for a class that is vast and varied, then the Searchers class is for YOU! Sometimes they invite a guest leader for a unit of study and other times members of this class take turns leading discussion. The class studies Bible related literature, best selling novels, movies related to religious issues, current events, and workbooks, such as The Will of God. The Searchers is a class of great discussion, social activity, group community projects and is still small enough for friendships to bloom!

The Sendero class is a group of approximately 25 enthusiastic Christians. Sendero is the Spanish word for path, reminding us that we are called to follow Jesus in the way of love. This multi-dimensional class lives and breathes the United Methodist theme of “Open Hearts, Open Minds, and Open Doors.” Open Hearts: Class members accept individual differences and willingly share one another’s burdens. Open Minds: Our classes are purposefully discussion oriented with a wide spectrum of views, beliefs, and theology represented. Using both basic Bible study and current social issues, Sendero strives to grow and mature in Faith. Open Doors: Anyone is welcome in this group! The class is comprised of singles and couples from 30-somethings to well over 65. Here is a place for everyone who wants to share their love and grow in their faith through Jesus Christ.

This is a discussion-based class of people which is intentionally intergenerational. The class is primarily geared towards young adults, but there are people represented from almost every age group, both married and single. We embrace both conservative and progressive views. We have people who attend after the 8:15 service and those who attend either the 11am or 11:20 service afterwards.

We wanted to be very intentional about creating an atmosphere of diversity that was a contrast from any other group that meets on Sunday Morning. Typically, the discussion will be geared around a book study or a topic from contemporary Christian culture.

This is a safe place to bring your thoughts, doubts, questions and answers. Join us…we’ll save a chair for you.

Any age, any stage of life is welcome to the Vanguard Class! Enjoy new friendships, wonderful fellowship and Bible Study in this lecture format class. Not only will you share with friends of all walks of life, but also with a retired UM bishop and several retired UM pastors. This class is for singles and couples, professional to retired.
